Is Shylock from the Vendor of Venice a villain or sufferer?
My English teacher asked us this kind of and that kept me personally thinking. Is Shylock a villain because of his attitude towards Christians or a sufferer because he shed his girl and dropped in the courtroom? 5 yrs ago Report Abuse

Often , The character Shylock, in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, can be portrayed as being a beastly monstrosity, with a lust for Antonio's life. By using a more cautious examination it could be determined that Shylock was an upstanding member of his community, whom endured mistreatment, forgave conveniently, and upheld the persuits and law. Shylock experienced much of Antonio's abuse, overt a long period of the time. This can be seen by the large volume of disgraces he has bore. A good example is in Work 3 Field 1, you start with line 52:
" This individual hath disgraced me half a million, laughed at my losses,
mocked at my increases, scorned my nation, thwarted my offers, cooled my local freinds, heated acquire enemies... " -Shylock
Shylock experienced such a magnanimous soul, that this individual even provided Antonio, who abused him terribly, credit, free of interest. Shylock was willing to bank loan money to a single who absolutely ruined him in public, in terms that have been nicer than his typical business terms. This kind, forgiving heart can be seen in Act 1 Scene several beginning with range 148: " Why, appear how you tornado! I would always be friends with you and
have got your like, forget the names that you have stained me
with, supply your existing needs and take simply no doit of usance
to get my moneys, and you'll not really hear me! This is kind I give. " -Shylock
