Against School started out with great promise, but it lost my attention after a string of ill-founded examples that he used to try and justify his claim.

In the first part of the essay, the way he finds fault with the schooling system resonated with me. The students don’t know what they are studying, why they are studying it or what application any of their classes has in the real world. That is enough to frustrate anyone, let alone children who are curious by nature, and find great joy in learning things that they can understand and connect with. So, I completely agreed with Gatto in the first part of this essay.

There are a couple of arguments toward the middle of the essay that failed to really convince me. The comparison of the current American education system to the Prussian system felt flawed in the sense that the schooling system has undergone massive changes between now and when the actual borrowing of system happened. The assertion that the current system is deliberately designed to deceptively fulfil purposes other than facilitating capable manpower is somewhat bold but interesting non-etheless. The actual purposes listed out are very interesting.Although I do not agree with the first point he presented, I feel like there is some truth in the second point- about conformity. The fifth point about schools discourage pupils that fall back early on is something I agree with. The rest of the arguments though, make the whole essay look like a conspiracy theory.

Again towards the end, the suggestions he provides to help keep children alive and curious are really good. The concluding paragraph is also another part of this essay that I like. Too bad it cannot undo what the bad and paranoid sounding arguments did to this essay.

Despite my first impression of Against School as a slightly disjointed essay, I did in fact agree with many of the points John Taylor Gatto made. I thought he made a valid point regarding how we should teach our students. He argues that instead of teaching them to be employees and consumers we should instead teach them to be leaders and adventurers. After reading this comment I immediately thought of Daniel Pink’s bookA Whole New Mindin which Pink explains the new age into which our world is transitioning. Pink makes the point that we are moving away from the Information Age of left-brained thinkers who value functionality to the Conceptual Age of right-brained thinkers who value aesthetics. Pink goes on to explain that the world demands innovators and abstract thinkers. Because of that demand we need an education system that isn’t based on the values of the Information Age.

In Gatto’s essay, he recalls the Prussian ideals of education that were adopted when the United States first began. These ideals look to give students the basic tools to find a job. This method was effective at some point; however, it was during an age in which people did the work machines do for us now. Because machines are taking over and making some jobs obsolete, we cannot afford to arm our students with just the basic skills to find a job. They won’t find one. We don’t know what the job market will look like in the next five to ten years, so therefore we must give our students the chance think beyond the textbook. We can’t limit them to the constraints of standardization. Our world requires us to be thinkers and innovators so we must give our youth the opportunity to fulfill that.

In Against School, John Taylor Gatto argues that boredom is a major component of our current education system. I agree that it is true, both teacher and students are bored in our current passive system where one is to give, and the other to receive an education. Learning should be much more active and responsive, that kids should take an education. However, Gatto took this problem and proposed a very extreme solution of removing the school system as a whole.

He argues that people in the past have come along and gone to do extraordinary things in life without a mandatory education. This is true, but Gatto fails to address the different context and time period of these people, as well as the type of genius they are. Geniuses may be common as dirt, and a different approach to education may blossom different aspects of different people. However, that does not mean learning certain customs, values, and fundamentals in core subjects does not guide us to being geniuses at being functioning members of society. Being a genius should not be limited to creating a single exemplary product, but should be extended to include having a stable job and family. Successful mandatory education may produce robots of society, but I think that sometimes we need aspects of a robot in order to go on to do amazing things. We need some guidance and structure, to learn to question and take control.

Although the K-12 education system in the United States is plagued with issues, such as boring content and a curriculum with seemingly useless information, it is a necessary part of our society. John Gatto in his article Against School argues just that, even saying that our K-12 educational system perpetuates greater class separation and is a way to render the populace ‘manageable’. While I’ve certainly been in many classes where the only thing I care about is how fast the seconds tick away, I think that our education system as boring and redundant as it may be is necessary to give our nation’s children an education to hopefully improve their lives. Gatto gives the examples of Carnegie, Twain and Farragut among others as successful people who did not receive a high school education. While similar examples could be pulled from today’s society such as Bill Gates and Steve jobs who both did not complete college, these are rare cases that are not relevant to the rest of society. Unlike during Carnegie, Twain and Farragut’s time, we live in a more complex world that requires greater and broader knowledge to succeed. It is no longer possible to be successful like Edison by just inviting a light bulb. While I think that a strict core curriculum is pointless in college I think that it is essential in k-12. It helps students take classes that they otherwise wouldn’t take, possibly showing them something that they end up being interested in. In high school I was not interested in science but one of science requirements was to take physics, which I ended liking a lot. The core curriculum also helps students have a good general base before going into one specialization.
